Mat Pilates Brisbane
Build strength, balance, and flexibility
Pilates is becoming enormously popular here in Brisbane. Mat Pilates, in particular, is an amazing way to increase your flexibility and build a strong, balanced body.
Mat Pilates challenges the muscles for better strength
The Matwork Pilates practice is done entirely on the floor. Unlike Reformer Pilates, resistance equipment is not used. Instead, the moves rely on your body weight and the body’s own resistance to gravity to achieve fitness outcomes.
This technique specifically challenges the muscles. It also places less stress on joints and limbs. The positions and movements focus on the core and are designed to stretch and strengthen it.
Matwork Pilates offers the foundations to build your regime up
Your Pilates class will vary from session to session and instructor to instructor. But every class our Brisbane Pilates studio offers applies the six principles of Pilates. These are:
Centring
Centre the core or the muscles referred to as the ‘powerhouse’

Concentration
Learning to focus is important to carry out the exercises properly

Control
Concentration allows you to be in control of your movement

Precision
Think quality rather than quantity

Breathing
Set the rhythm of your movements and provide oxygen to your muscles

Flow
Move fluidly from one exercise to another
Mat Pilates is a great introduction to these important principles. By learning the foundations well, you can confidently build up to higher-intensity workouts.
CLASSES
Our Classes
Contrology
The original Pilates repertoire. Learn to master all of the original Pilates moves created by the man himself, Joseph Pilates. In this class you will build strength, stamina, coordination and endurance. Contrology is defined as “the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.” This class follows the original sequence of Pilates exercises focusing on the six Pilates principles - concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing. We teach both the Matwork and Reformer Repertoire so look out for this class in both our Mat / Barre studio and Reformer Studio. Class open to all levels - but be ready to challenge yourself!
Mat Stretch
Slow, Flow & Stretch. This Mat class will help calm the body and mind while you release tired and tense muscles and move your body with control and purpose.
Mat
A Full Body Pilates workout, performed on the Mat. This class is designed to challenge every muscle in the body as it is strengthened, lengthened and toned. On the mat, your body weight provides resistance against gravity, making the workout high in its intensity, without being jarring to the joints. No class will ever be the same as Mat Pilates can be done in many different styles and with a number of different props to aid in refining and conditioning the body.

Strength & flexibility
Mat Pilates targets the muscles located between the pelvic floor and the ribcage and is an amazing way to strengthen your body. This is great for countering the effects of long periods of sitting at a desk or being hunched over our devices. You will also notice an improvement in your flexibility, stability and balance.
Tone & reduce lower back pain
Although core strengthening is at the heart of a Mat Pilates workout, there are great spin-off benefits. It tones the abdominals and builds the strength necessary to help alleviate lower back pain.
A workout for your mind
Matwork Pilates is fitness for your mind. The concentration element means that your brain gets a workout too. The ease of movement and clarity acts as a form of mindfulness and better equips us to deal with stress or anxiety in our lives.
